These awards are particularly special, as they are chosen solely based on student nominations and feedback. Tovar’s students wrote at great length, particularly highlighting his ability to make abstract concepts more concrete to help them understand, his generosity with his office hours, patient explanations when students asked questions, engagement with getting to know students as people, and the inclusiveness in his classroom. Several specifically mentioned that his effort at sharing with them stories of chemistry from diverse backgrounds (people of color and women) helped students to see themselves in the field for the first time, and to feel welcome. Though students find Orgo the most intimidating and difficult of all their JHU courses, Tovar has brought them into the material, creating communities that facilitate knowledge sharing and support, making them feel welcomed and heard. Congratulations, this is well deserved.
