In 2012, DOW Chemical embarked on a mission to strengthen academic research lab safety through a team of graduates and postdoctoral scholars called the lab safety team movement. Within this article, many chemistry student safety committees from universities across the country were interviewed to get a gauge of their best practices and challenges they face to ensure the safety of all of their chemistry labs.

Our Chemistry Student Safety Committee here in the chemistry department at Johns Hopkins University were interviewed for this article! Their interview added to the data being used to help set the standard of research lab safety procedures while offering insight to their research lab safety successes, research lab safety challenges and ultimately how to unite all researchers to ensure everyone is safe while research is being conducted.
