The Goldberg Group reports a series of sequentially formed peroxo(diiron), Fe^IV(O), and Fe^III(OH) complexes from the reaction of a thiolate-ligated nonheme iron complex with O₂. These complexes improve our understanding of the fundamental process of dioxygen activation by iron complexes and the related sulfur-ligated nonheme iron enzymes.
